The ART of WAR and the Military

The Art of War, known in Chinese as the Pingfa and in Japanese as the Sonshi, is a 2,500 year old masterpiece written by Chinese military strategist, Sun Tzu. Why should military personnel read and study this classic and other works on military strategy and tactics? Well, let’s take a look!

Throughout history, human beings have had conflicts and fought wars. War has always played a significant part in our civilization and in our lives. The principles and philosophies expressed in the Art of War have been used in one conflict after another.

US Generals such as John Fuller, George Patton, Douglas MacArthur, Norman Schwarzkopf and Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery have managed to utilize Sun Tzu’s principles in their military careers, to great effect!

Of course, use of philosophies taken from the Art of War, haven’t been limited to the USA military. Japanese Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto, Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung, Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap, Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin and Cuba’s Fidel Castro all are said to have been familiar with and students of Sun Tzu.

Whether the reader is in the Air Force, the Army, The Navy or the Marines, all can benefit from reading and studying Asian military strategy and tactics and Sun Tzu’s masterpiece is at the top of the list!

The Art of War is part of the curriculum of many major military academies. It is on the reading lists for US military officers and is part of West Points US military academy military science program. It is also required reading for CIA agents and operatives.

It is clear, if you are already in the Air Force, Army, Navy or Marines, or planning on joining, if you aspire to be a military officer, whether you are a private first class or a five star General, you too can benefit greatly from the Art of War and the genius of the venerable Sun Tzu!
